I wish I had a check list for preparation then. Over the past 30 years of Florida hurricanes, I’ve learned what it takes to prepare effectively and I’ve compiled the list below.
Fill your vehicle gas tanks and any gas containers as soon as possible
Test start your generator
Fill any prescription’s that are less than half full, this includes pet meds
Finish all your laundry
Store all lawn furniture and outdoor belongings indoors or tie them down
Tie down or flip over trampolines and put weights on top
Freeze water bottles to use for ice packs
Fill propane tank for grill
Turn your thermostat down low to keep your house cool longer after losing power
Locate you homeowner’s insurance policy. Scan and email it to yourself
Save your insurance company’s phone number for claims in your phone
Have easy to prepare meals ready
Take pictures or inventory valuables and email them to yourself
Fill your bathtub with water
Have batteries and flashlights in a convenient place
Move vehicles away from trees
Get some of your favorite comfort food. It always helps with stress
